Here’s what we know so far about the Godzilla** sequel: it’s definitely happening, as Legendary and Warner Bros. have already announced. And, as per his Comic-Con video appearance, Gareth Edwards is back to direct. Today we learned the release date, at least for the States: June 8, 2018.

Why so far in the future? Blame Star Wars. Edwards is hard at work developing one of the spin-off films, which will keep him busy for the next couple of years. But he’s had a hand in figuring out the new Godzilla outing already, hinting at the Con that we’ll see classic God-botherers Motha, Rodan and Ghidorah in the film. That muffled screaming sound you hear is Gamera screeching into his pillow at being left out yet again.

With $508 million worldwide, Godzilla is in the franchise business despite a muted critical reaction to the first film. Legendary itself is staying in the monster business elsewhere too, announcing King Kong prequel/reboot/whatever Skull Island at July’s Con, with a planned November, 2016 release set for that movie.
