As Sony's Spider-Man cinematic universe attempts to expand once again via various spin-off movies, one of those closer to being realise appeared to be a team-up for Spidey characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. And in a refreshing change from the usual pick of indie movie males, The Secret Life Of Bees/Beyond The Lights' Gina Prince-Blythewood is the choice to direct the new movie, called Silver And Black.

With the clock ticking down towards a planned October 2018 release, Prince-Blythewood will be getting to work on casting the film and further developing the script by Marvel animated veteran and Thor: Ragnarok co-writer Christopher Yost, who worked from a draft originally written by Westworld's Lisa Joy.

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, the character of Silver Sable made her debut in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man in 1985. Leader of the Wild Pack and CEO of Silver Sable International, as a mercenary she is a hunter of war criminals. She has, over the years, worked alongside heroes of the Marvel Universe and also gone up against them when her methods proved in conflict with those heroes. The character had previously appeared on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Black Cat, created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man in 1979. Her real name is Felicia Hardy, and she's the daughter of a world famous cat burglar. Raped during her college years, she came out the other side of that experience determined never to be a victim again. Deciding to emulate her father, but assuming the identity of the Black Cat to do so, she mastered acrobatics and numerous fighting styles.

Spider-Man: Homecoming aims to breathe fresh life into the character this July, and while Sony is intent on getting more value out of the character's world, the likes of the animated Spidey film in production and the planned Venom with Tom Hardy starring won't have the same direct links to the MCU. Which does seem a little odd, given how much value that connection offers.
