George A Romero’s name may forever be linked with the walking dead, but he’s branching for a horror thriller based on a Japanese short story.

He’ll write and direct Solitary Isle, which takes its plot from a short story by The Ring and Dark Water writer Koji Suzuki. Isle sees an expedition arrive on a deserted island, which turns out to be anything but. Soon, a powerful, unknown force is hunting down the new arrivals.

Kadokawa Pictures and Hyde Park Entertainment are providing the cash, while 20th Century Fox plans to distribute the finished film. Kadokawa owns the rights to a load of other stories, which it aims to turn into low budget movies – provided this first one is a hit, of course…
