Jodie Foster is making one of her rare, welcome turns behind the camera for a new drama that blends topical economic outrage with a hostage situation. The first trailer for Money Monster, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, has arrived online.

Money Monster features Clooney as Lee Gates, a loud, gregarious financial TV host who offers up stock advice on his eponymous hit cable TV show in a style that would probably make Robert Peston blanch. Roberts is Nancy Fenn, the director and executive producer of the show, who has to deal with his charismatic but chaotic presenting method every day.

But this particular programme will not herald the start of just another broadcast day: Kyle Budwell (Unbroken's Jack O’Connell), a blue-collar worker sick of the damage still being done by Wall Street, has invaded the studio toting a gun and a bomb. With a growing family to support, he takes Gates hostage on air to increase a stock’s value and expose the corruption behind the stock market, mostly so he can get some answers.

That doesn't sit well with Dominic West's Walt Camby, the CEO of the company behind a bad stock call that Gates makes, who tries to minimise the damage to his own career by hiding out in his private jet.

With a script by Jamie Linden developed from earlier work by Alan DiFiore and Jim Kouf, the film will be out here on May 27.
