George Clooney Headed North Again?

The writhing mass of potential projects that George Clooney is attached to, either as director or actor (or both) is so big that if it ever achieves sentience, the human race is pretty much doomed. Now one of those rumoured tentacles is showing signs of life, with Vulture hearing that Clooney is looking to gear back up on an adaptation of the play Farragut North.

Clooney last indicated his interest in transferring political playwright Beau Willimon's tale of political dirty tricks from off-Broadway to the big screen back in 2007, when there was talk of a dream team matchup with GC directing and Leonardo DiCaprio starring.

But now it looks like things have changed, and Clooney is apparently targeting Star Trek’s Chris Pine for the lead role of Stephen Myers, a young spinbot who works for a presidential candidate vying to overtake a rival senator. Pine has an advantage over other actors – he played the part on stage last year in LA to wide acclaim.

And Pine’s not the only performer Clooney’s looking at. While Brad Pitt had been interested in the role of Paul Zara, Myers’ boss, it seems Philip Seymour Hoffman (who has a less crowded schedule) is stepping into that role, with Paul Giamatti as their rival’s campaign manager.

Plus, there are offers out to Wrestler stars Evan Rachel Wood (as a female staffer who falls for Myers) and Marisa Tomei (to play a journalist who snoops around the campaign camp).

Clooney, meanwhile, might take on a small role (probably the candidate himself), although all the above is of course moot if he can’t get the dosh together to make the thing in the first place. But considering what happened when he turned his attention to the intersection of politics, ethics and the media in Good Night, and Good Luck, we really hope he gets to finally make the movie.
