Garry Marshall and Anne Hathaway

Though there were reports last year shooting down any possibility of a third Princess Diaries film (despite rumours of one in early development), things have taken another turn. Garry Marshall, who directed both the 20001 original and its 2004 sequel, is now saying that a third instalment of the royal series adapted from Meg Cabot's books could well be on the way.

If you're a fan of the films, this will come as good news, but take caution that nothing is certain at this point. "I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan," Marshall tells People. "Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we're going to do it."

Not to mention that Hathaway's film career has been busy of late, and she's previously gone on the record as saying she looks for movies that aren't Princess Diaries-style projects because of how closely she was associated with the role of Mia from the movies. Still, she's long since established herself as an actress and award-winner, so she doesn't exactly have to worry on that front.

For now, it remains in the vaporware category of projects people involved would like to make, but haven't turned into actual films yet. But this is certainly the most promising sign yet.
