G.I. Joe**: Rise of the Cobra** took over $100million at the worldwide box office this weekend, and with $56.2m of that from the US, took the number one spot at the US box office as well. Say hello to Paramount's third successful franchise of the summer, after Star Trek and Transformers, because we're guessing a sequel will be announced within the week.

In second place with a respectable $20.1m was Julie & Julia, the Meryl Streep and Amy Adams-starring double-stranded biopic of 1950s cook Julia Childs and the modern New Yorker who sets out to master her recipes. That looks set to have good legs over the coming weeks - unlike Funny People, which dropped a whopping 65% to $7.9m in its second week.

G-Force, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Ugly Truth held up better, but the next big new release, Hawaii-set thriller A Perfect Getaway, fared less well, landing in seventh place with $5.8m.

Further down the chart, 500 Days of Summer took $3.7m and tenth place after expanding more widely, for a total of $12.3 in four weeks, and **Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen **crept another hair closer to the $400 million mark with $393.7m. Expect it to cross the line sometime next week.
