The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is traditionally a strong one at the Stateside box office, as families gather and some need a distraction from the squabbling and overeating. While Disney got ahead of the competition by opening Frozen 2 last weekend, the animated sequel is proving to be just as much of a winner as the original, and it dominated both this weekend and the five-day period that constitutes the holiday box office. Anna, Elsa and the gang scooped up $85.2 million across three days and a record $123.7 million for the five, according to studio estimates.
That all means that the film now has nearly $300 million in the bank domestically, and with international takings, it has hit $738 million in 12 days, which means it should easily march across the billion dollar mark provided its earning power holds up. Whether it can beat the $1.2 billion made by the original remains to be seen.
But the Arendelle gang weren't the only ones with reason to celebrate. Rian Johnson's whodunnit Knives Out was second with $27 million for the weekend and $41.7 million in five days on release (plus a few million from early preview screenings.) It's a big success for the film, which had been predicted to earn around $25 million. Globally, the movie has made more than $70 million in just a weekend, a resounding triumph for original film.
Third was Ford V Ferrari (Le Mans '66 here), which earned $13.2 million this weekend, ahead of fourth-place A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood on $11.8 million. Drama Queen & Slim arrived fourth, making $11.7 million across three days and $15.8 million for the five-day chunk. It might not appear to be a big figure compared to the top two entries, but it's ahead of expectations.
21 Bridges stayed in place at sixth for $5.8 million across three days, and Playing With Fire stood its ground in seventh, earning $4.2 million. In fact, the rest of the chart is unchanged, as Midway took $3.9 million in eighth, Joker at ninth ($2 million) and Last Christmas sitting 10th with $1.9 million.
