The Front Runner – Exclusive

Gary Hart isn’t a world-famous name in American politics – and there’s a reason for that. Back in 1988, he was in the middle of a compelling presidential campaign that could have seen him mentioned in the same breath as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. Except, a sex scandal erupted when it was discovered that Hart was cheating on his wife – a blow-up that sent him crashing out of the race. Hart’s story is the focus of Jason Reitman’s new film The Front Runner, starring Hugh Jackman in the lead – and Empire has a brand new image, as seen in the upcoming Review of the Year issue.

“It’s fascinating that some people come away feeling this sense of loss for a guy like Hart not having been able to take part in the political process. And some people see him as naive and arrogant and getting what he deserved,” co-writer Matt Bai, who also penned Gary Hart book All The Truth Is Out, tells Empire in the December issue. “It’s gratifying, because it means we’ve done something complicated enough and trusting enough of the audience.”
