Sci-fi pitch from Shane Salerno

If you see screenwriter Shane Salerno in a bar anytime over the weekend… he’s buying.

For the 35 year-old screenwriter has just sold an original spec script, Doomsday Protocol, to Fox for a seven-figure sum.

Plot details are under wraps at the moment, but the thriller is apparently a take on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai – or, if you want to keep your genre ducks in a row, Battle Beyond The Stars.

Here’s what we do know: Earth is under threat, and only a group of aliens and humans with different abilities can band together to save it. If we were a betting website, we’d lay down a tenner that there’ll be seven heroes.

Salerno has largely specialised in sci-fi during his career, with writing credits on Armageddon and, more ominously, the atrocious Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem. But we hope that was just a blip – and Fox seem pretty serious about Doomsday Protocol. We'll keep an eye on this one.
