The immortal quarterback/intergalactic hero is set to return to save every one of us once again. Yes, Flash Gordon, too long absent from our screens, is about to return in a new film from Stephen Sommers. The Mummy loving helmer is a long time fan of the comic books, and has now secured the rights to bring Flash back to the big screen. The last outing for the series was the 1980 film, starring Sam J Jones as Flash, Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless, Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan and Blue Peter's Peter Duncan as "Young Treeman", along with a stonking soundtrack by Queen (all together now: "Flash! AAAhhahh!"). It was B-movie genius, frankly, and while we're not sure if it can be bettered, more of the same would go down a treat. There are just not enough twirly moustached space dictators threatening the Earth with annihilation and being stopped by American football players on our screens these days. As an added bonus, work on the film will be accompanied by a relaunched Flash comic series from Top Cow, featuring Flash, love interest Dale Arden and mad scientist Dr Hans Zarkov, which will allow us all to reacquaint ourselves with the seventy year old characters. Sommers is producing the film at the moment, and is also said to be considering writing the script, but there is no word yet on whether he will direct. If he does write the script, however, don't be surprised if he turns up in the director's chair, because he has yet to direct a script he didn't write and has written few scripts for other people. So is he the right person? Well, while Van Helsing was disappointing, Sommers could still be the man to pull off this kind of tongue-in-cheek action adventure
