His very public meltdown doesn’t seem to have affected Charlie Sheen’s career too much. He’s still got a sitcom on the air (Anger Management, which has just received an order for 90 more episodes) and he’s the star of Roman Coppola’s new offbeat indie A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III. Now the first pictures from the movie are online, a couple of which you can check out below courtesy of EW.

Talking with the magazine’s site, Coppola denied that he cast Sheen as the main character, a playboy left broken-hearted when the love of his life ditches him, because of his reputation for hard living. “Charlie is so perfect for the role, but he’s not perfect because of the public profile we’ve seen in the news,” he says. “He’s incredibly talented as an actor, he has tons of charisma, he’s very witty. He’s very funny and charming. You can use your charm sometimes as a problem solver — and my character, that’s what he’s been doing. He’s been sliding through on life, using his charm and wit and charisma to get past some problems. But the problems are still there, and that’s the story of the movie.”

Given that the film travels inside his twisted noggin, don’t expect everything to stay normal for very long. “It’s not strictly realistic. In the film, because some of the sequences take place in the imagination of the main character, it goes to fantastical circumstances and settings. There’s a western sequence, there’s an underground spy-agency sequence. There are some playful touches that, for me, are cued off this main character, whose professional life is creating imagery, stylized imagery like album cover art.”

With Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Aubrey Plaza, Katheryn Winnick and Mary Elizabeth Winstead also in the film, A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III arrives next February in the US, but doesn’t have a set UK date yet. For more pics and interview material, head to EW’s site.
