When it comes to casting a matinee idol – even a fading one – you can’t get much better than Bill Nighy. Their Finest, the latest film from director Lone Scherfig (An Education, The Riot Club), casts him as just that in the midst of London’s ‘40s Blitz, as he reluctantly gets involved with a movie aiming to boost morale.

Based on Lissa Evans’ novel Their Finest Hour And A Half, Their Finest also stars Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin as Catrin and Buckley, respectively; the screenwriting pair hoping to raise the nation’s dwindling wartime spirits – and inspire America to join the war effort. Carol and Girls’ Jake Lacy is also onboard as an American GI who gets involved in the movie.
Their Finest is released on 21 Friday April.
