The need for Speed Racer

Readers may not be familiar with Japanese cartoon series Speed Racer, but chances are that you're not going to live in ignorance much longer. After ten years of false starts, the boy racer should finally get to run the course after Vince Vaughn pitched his angle on the story and got things going. Speed Racer is the name of the title character, the second son of a genius race car designer. After his older brother runs away from home, Speed Racer becomes one of the world's best drivers, despite looking far too young to be allowed behind the wheel. As he and his family travel from race to race, they are watched by the mysterious Racer X - who is in fact none other than Speed's long-lost brother Rex! Can Racer X protect Speed from the villainous types on the track? Will Speed manage a Michael Schumacher style dominance of the racing world? And who names their son Speed anyway? Vaughn's plan is to play Racer X himself and focus on the family angle of the story, with the protective older brother secretly still trying to help his family out, while keeping his identity hidden. Producers are hiring a writer even as we speak, so with any luck fans will soon see Speed on screen at last.
