It may no longer have the services of David Fincher, Daniel Craig or Rooney Mara, but Sony is sticking with its plan to keep adapting the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books featuring hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander, even if the current idea is a controversial one for Stieg Larsson fans. Don't Breathe's Fede Alvarez has taken over the director's chair, and the studio is scheduling the The Girl In The Spider's Web for October 2018.

As Larsson completists point out, this one isn’t part of the Millennium Trilogy. In fact, it wasn't even written by the author himself. Penned by David Lagercrantz with continuity to both the crime writer’s style and his characters in mind, The Girl In The Spider’s Web sends Dragon Tattoo’s odd-couple pairing of hacker Lisbeth Salander and seasoned journo Mikael Blomkvist on new misadventures.

Now the challenge for Alvarez will be to find an entirely new cast, and in particular a new Salander. "I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity," he says in a statement. "Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part – finding our Lisbeth." Steven Knight wrote the earlier drafts of the screenplay, which has since seen work by Alvarez and Monsters: Dark Continent's Jay Basu.

Alvarez will start the cameras cranking in September ready for that 2018 release slot.
