With the awards circuit coming to a close this weekend thanks to the arrival of the Oscars, director Yorgos Lanthimos can truly start to think about something other than people saying nice things about his most recent film, trophy hoover The Favourite. Lanthimos has now settled on a potential next project via crime novel adaptation Pop. 1280.

Turning Jim Thompson's book into a film has long been a dream of Lanthimos, no doubt attracted by its nastier edges and the chance to inject his own take into another genre. Published in 1964, it follows the corrupt sheriff of a small town who manipulates the people around him in order to win the next election.

Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney will once again produce, reuniting with the director after working on several of his past films. There's no word yet on who might star in the film, but given the success of The Favourite, agents will be flooding the team with suggestions even as we write this.
