Next weekend is when summer officially finishes across the pond, particularly in movie-going terms. But this weekend’s box office was so slow, it was almost as if it had decided to crawl to a halt early. The Expendables 2 got an easy win with a paltry $13.5 million to top the charts for a second weekend, while several new arrivals flopped and some failed to even crack the top 10 (yes, horror movie The Apparition, launching in limited release, we’re looking at you).
The rest of the top five stayed almost identical, with The Bourne Legacy holding on to second place with $9.3 million, ParaNorman staying in third with $8.5 million and The Campaign sitting at fourth with $7.4 million. The Dark Knight Rises jumped back up one place to take fifth place, earning $7.2 million.
Sixth place was nabbed by The Odd Life Of Timothy Green, which also hopped back up a spot, likely on the strength of people taking their kids to see it to find out if it made them cry. It earned $7.1 million, beating out new release Premium Rush. The David Koepp co-written and directed, Joseph Gordon-Levitt-starring bike thriller only made $6.3 million for a seventh-place launch. That put it just ahead of anti-President Obama argumentary 2016: Obama’s America, which expanded and surprised prognosticators by jumping into the top 10 at eighth place with $6.2 million.
Hope Springs slipped to ninth with $6 million while new Dax Shepard comedy Hit And Run just made it into the charts with $4.6 million for 10th place.
