Lady Macbeth

Out, damned spot! Thought it all sounds rather Shakespearean, the upcoming period drama Lady Macbeth is decidedly not a spin-off from some burgeoning Macbeth Cinematic Universe. It is in fact a loose adaptation of Nikolaj Leskov's 19th-century novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, exploring themes of gender, class and race in a harsh period landscape. We've got our hands on an exclusive look at the new film - take a look below.

Florence Pugh plays Katherine, the de facto Lady Macbeth of the piece, with as much passion, intrigue and murder as her Shakespearean counterpart. In this clip, we see her weight guessed by a servant (Cosmo Jarvis) in a somewhat unconventional manner. Weightwatchers, this ain't.

Directed by William Oldroyd, the film also stars Christopher Fairbank, Naomi Ackie and Paul Hilton, and has earned positive reviews from critics (including a four-star notice from Empire) after a well-received tour of the festival circuit last year.

This damned spot is out soon: Lady Macbeth arrives in UK cinemas on April 28. A live-broadcast Q&A from the Victoria and Albert Museum screens in selected cineams from April 27.
