Hidden Figures

There are many fictional dramas focusing on space travel (one just put out its latest trailer), but what of the real-life space race? And in particular, the unsung heroes who helped astronauts slip the bonds of Earth, headed for orbit and beyond? That's the subject of Hidden Figures, and you can see an exclusive new image from the film above.

Hidden Figures's title has a dual meaning, since it refers not only to people who are generally sidestepped in the history books, but also numerical contributions. The film chronicles Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), the brilliant mathematician who worked with Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) as the main brains behind John Glenn's first trip into space and back in 1962. People remember his being the first orbit of the Earth, now we'll properly learn who helped get him there. Kevin Costner, meanwhile, is the boss of the space programme.

Ted Melfi is in the director's chair for this one, with writer Allison Schroeder adapting Margot Lee Shetterly's book Hidden Figures: The Story Of The African-American Women Who Helped Win The Space Race, which doesn't hit stores until September.

Also in the cast? Kirsten Dunst, Aldis Hodge, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali and Glen Powell. Hidden Figures will be out in the UK on February 24 next year.
