Good news for everyone who loved The Matador – director Richard Shepard has decided on his next project, which will be a screen adaptation of Jeff Abott's novel Panic.

Owned by the Weinstein Company, it's been described by Shepard as a "stylish, 1970's-type paranoid action thriller", and tells the story of a documentary filmmaker who returns to his family home, only to find that his mother has been killed and his father is missing. And people are trying to kill him. As he deconstructs the elaborate lie that was his upbringing, he discovers that his parents were spies, and that he can trust no-one.

It's still in early stages though (Shepard will make Spring Break In Bosnia in the meantime), so don't expect to see it before very late 2006, more likely 2007.
