Eric Idle created the musical Monty Python's Spamalot loosely based on Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Now that musical is itself going to become a movie.

Idle is writing the script, which channels the Arthurian legends that powered Holy Grail and gives them a typically madcap spin. The musical has been a big hit, running in London, Broadway and various countries and spawning several tours.

20th Century Fox is behind the effort, hiring acclaimed Broadway director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who has scored Tony awards and nominations for shows such as The Book Of Mormon, The Drowsy Chaperone, the new Mean Girls musical and worked on Spamalot itself, under director Mike Nichols.

Deadline reports that the film won't be a simple adaptation of the show, but will exploit what the film format can do. You know the next step: we can hardly wait for the musical based on the movie based on the musical based on the movie...
