Yesterday we revealed the first half of our Top 20 Films of 2018 list – an (admittedly early) celebration of the movies that wormed their way into the hearts of the Empire team over the last 12 months. Now it’s time to unveil a few more titles from the countdown, as collated for the Empire’s upcoming December issue, the Review of the Year.

In at 10, it’s BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee’s snappy genre-meld that brought sharp humour side-by-side with brilliantly blunt imagery. Then it’s the intoxicating Phantom Thread, still weaving its way through our minds all these months later at number 9. With A Star Is Born Bradley Cooper appeared as a fully-formed filmmaker, delivering an emotional, vibrant new take on a story long-told, coming in at 8. Then at 7 we have another brilliant directorial debut with Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, boasting incredible performances from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. And capping off this batch, at 6 First Man shoots for the stars – and pulls off a very strong landing.
