Poor old Spider-Man. If only his spider-senses could have told him that his on-screen ladylove, Emma Stone, would be cheating on him with another superhero. She’s just joined the cast of Alejando Gonzalez Innaritu’s new dark comedy Birdman, which will also feature Naomi Watts, Michael Keaton and Zach Galifianakis.

Birdman is a slight change of gear for Inarritu, a man normally known for such deep and painful films as Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Biutiful. But lest you think he’s going totally wacky, the new movie promises to be a dark comedy.

We follow Keaton as an actor once known for playing the titular iconic superhero (ironic, given Keaton’s time in the Bat suit) who is trying to dig himself out of a career slump by mounting a play based on a Raymond Chandler short story. But he faces problems with the show’s egotistical leading man.

Stone will be his daughter, a young woman fresh out of rehab who is now his assistant. Watts is on as the play’s leading lady, while Galifianakis will be the conniving producer.

With a written by Inarritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo, the film should start shooting later this year.
