Having earned plenty of plaudits for his stint directing all of True Detective's first season, Beasts Of No Nation's Cary Fukunaga is headed back to TV, this time with dark comedy on his mind. He has Emma Stone and Jonah Hill lining to star in Maniac.
The series is adapted from the 2014 Nordic series of the same name, which follows a guy who lives as a hero in his fantasy life in order to escape the mundane reality that he's actually locked up in an institution. According to Deadline, Hill and Stone, who worked together on Superbad, will both play patients in the place.
All this, of course, assumes the project finds a home, though given the director and actors attached, we doubt it'll have much trouble rounding up interested broadcasters either on cable or streaming. If it does go ahead, the plan is to make two series straight away and for Fukunaga to direct most, if not all the episodes.
Stone was last seen in Irrational Man and is part of the cast for Damien Chazelle's La La Land, out here on July 15. Hill is on screens now in the Coens' Hail, Caesar!, will be heard in Seth Rogen's animated comedy Sausage Party (due August 15) and seen in Todd Phillips' new based-on-truth comedy War Dogs, which lands on August 26.
