Emile Hirsch appears to be keeping to a plan of alternating thoughtful indies with high concept pics. He turned up last in Taking Woodstock and now he’s jumped aboard alien invasion thriller The Darkest Hour.

The** 28 Days Later**-style film sees a group of travelling American teens in Russia caught up in a battle against marauders from the stars in film by Chris Gore, who shot bio-terror drama Right At Your Door.

Olivia Thrilby signed on last week and now Hirsch is likely to be the leader of the group that has to find a way to survive the encounter.

Timur Bekmambetov, who is producing this along with the 5,000 other films he’s developing, has opened up his custom-built production facility in Moscow for the film to shoot this summer.
