After at least one previous movie and a vast array of different TV series based on the property, it’s perhaps debatable if the world truly needs another Power Rangers film. But Lionsgate and Rangers producer Haim Saban are pressing on regardless, and have added Me And Earl And The Dying Girl’s R.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger.

Cyler joins The Martian’s Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger) and Ludi Lin (Black Ranger) in the film, about which little is known, plot-wise. But Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been busy writing a script that will no doubt touch on the usual Power Rangers plot: a group of teenagers are infused with superpowers and must save the world from a terrible threat. Which will, given the film’s budget, probably not take the form of a giant rubber monster or someone who looks like they just stepped out of a local panto production of Buck Rogers. Or perhaps that’s part of the fun?

However it turns out, Project Almanac’s Dean Israelite is the man charged with bringing the movie together, and we can expect it to land in January 2017. Cyler, meanwhile, is at work on David Michod's War Machine (nothing to do with Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes) and is part of the cast for TV movie I’m Dying Up Here.
