It was a three way battle between the good, the rad and the very ugly this weekend, as reigning champion Dunkirk faced opposition from new arrivals Atomic Blonde and The Emoji Movie. Despite a close battle between Christopher Nolan's latest and the animated adventure, Dunkirk took it, earning $28.1 million in its second weekend according to studio estimates.

That pushed the intense war film over the $100 million mark in the US, and it has already earned more than $234 million worldwide. It had the benefit of healthy reviews, as opposed to The Emoji Movie, which arrived in cinemas with a terrible 8% score on critical aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The 'toon still earned $25.6 million thanks to family audiences. Girls Trip stayed strong, moving down just one place to third with $20 million.

Atomic Blonde, however, didn't have quite such a good weekend, launching to $18.5 million and fourth place. Globally, the movie has made $24.4 million. We'll see whether it can generate more international interest as the weeks move on. Spider-Man: Homecoming was fifth, taking in $13.4 million after four weeks in the charts.

War For The Planet Of The Apes slipped to sixth with $10.3 million, while Despicable Me 3, faced with new animated competition, dropped one place to seventh, making $7.7 million. Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is still looking like something of a dud, earning $6.8 million this weekend and barely nudging past $30 million in the States.

At ninth, we find Baby Driver on $4 million, while Wonder Woman stayed in the top 10 with $3.4 million. The summer's big success story is now closing on $400 million in the States and has crossed the $786 million mark globally.
