Actor gets three years

Robert Downey Jr experienced the California justice system in all its unrelenting glory yesterday when he received a three year jail sentence for repeatedly violating his parole. The initial charges relate to his battle against drug addication, which have seen him ordered by law to attend detox centres for abusers of cocaine and heroin. A judge at Malibu Municipal Court would not accept the defendant's lawyers pleas for leniency and said that he did not believe that Downey Jr was committed to conquering his addication. The actor, whose drug problems have already led to a catalogue of arrests and string in rehabilitation centres, is no stranger to prison. In 1997 he was jailed for 180 days for parole violation, but allowed to leave prison to complete contractual obligation on a film.
