Though there were a varied batch of newcomers this weekend, nothing was quite strong enough to dislodge the top two placements, which meant that Marvel's Doctor Strange and DreamWorks Animation's Trolls stayed in place at the head of the charts.

The latest release from the currently untouchable superhero factory added $43 million for a $152 million US total, according to studio estimates. Added to its foreign hauls, Doctor Strange is close to passing $500 million worldwide after just a couple of weeks on release. As for the brightly animated Trolls, the film made $35 million in the three-day period.

Thoughtful sci-fi drama Arrival was the strongest performer of the newcomers, earning $24 million and the best reviews of the weekend for third place. Almost Christmas took fourth, making $15.5 million. They pushed Hacksaw Ridge down to fifth, with the war drama adding $10.7 million.

The Accountant stayed in place at sixth, boosting its coffers with $4.5 million. That put it ahead of the week's third new film, Naomi Watts-starring thriller Shut In. It didn't manage to drum up much interest, taking in just $3.7 million for seventh. Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween began its tumble down the charts, falling to eighth with $3.5 million. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back also slipped a couple of places, adding $3.3 million in ninth. Finally, Inferno dropped five places, preparing to leave the top 10 on $3.2 million, having made a disappointing $31.5 million in the States.
