The world of Star Wars fandom was yesterday focused on the announcement of the Episode IX title – revealed to be The Rise Of Skywalker – but after JJ Abrams' latest entry arrives, we will likely be waiting a while for new main Wars film content, according to Disney boss Robert Iger.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Iger says that the company has decided to hold off on confirming and setting release dates for future films. "We will take a pause, some time, and reset," he said, "because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus."
Solo's disappointing box office (at least compared to other films in the series) certainly had an impact, and plans for other spin-offs are in limbo for now. "We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter," Iger says. "There are movies in development, but we have not announced them." While Rian Johnson is working on a new, separate trilogy and Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have their own plans, they're a ways off.
Yet while we might not see a new movie until 2021 or even 2022, it's not like the world will be hurting for Star Wars content; at least those who subscribe to the Disney+ service, what with The Mandalorian and Rogue One prequel series in the works.
