Diablo Cody is Mugatu-hot right now and possibly just got a little hotter with news that Universal have signed her up to write and produce its adaptation of the **Sweet Valley High **book series.

Sweet Valley High - or 'SVH' to those in the know or short of time - was a series of paperbacks chronicling the lives and loves of high-schooler siblings Jessica Wakefield (the footloose, cheerleading one) and her twin sister Elizabeth (the bookish, serious one). There were more than 150 books in total, and anyone who spent serious sofa time in the '90s will remember the TV series charting the girls' breathless adventures.

It should be familiar territory for Cody, who's carved a niche for herself bringing the sass to high-schooler dialogue. With that Juno Oscar adorning her mantlepiece and her high-school-set script for Jennifer's Body soon to be ringing in our ears, she's the closest thing Hollywood has to John Hughes' heir apparent.

Ironically, Jennifer's Body's poor opening weekend in the US won't have improved moods at Universal. The studio announced last week that it's halting investment on all development projects for the remainer of the year, apart from those already greenlit or fast-tracked.
