Shared universes are the hot topic for Hollywood right now, and, never ones to miss muscling in on a trend (Marvel, etc.), Netflix has been making plans to spawn its own. The company already has Mark Millar weaving projects out of his work and it has now hatched a deal with Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld for films based on his Extreme Universe comics characters.

The creator came up with the independent series after leaving Marvel in the early 1990s, following his success with New Mutants and X-Force. Extreme includes the likes of teams Brigade and Bloodstrike and characters such as Lethal and Kaboom.

Akiva Goldsman was part of a team trying to turn the idea into a movie early last year, and now Netflix has stepped in to offer a chance to craft an expansive series in the style of the MCU. Goldsman, who seems to spend all of his days running writers rooms at the moment, will set up another to work on ideas, producing the eventual films.

Liefeld co-created the Merc With A Mouth with Fabian Nicieza, and the chatty chaos merchant is back on our screens on 16 May.
