The currently shooting remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still is expanding its cast. Jon Hamm is the latest to join the story of an alien who comes to Earth to deliver a message of peace and gets shot at by us wretched humans who consider all extra terrestrials to be essentially violent creatures (oh the irony). Quite rightly he then unleashes his big ass robot on our puny species.

Hamm, a Golden Globe nominee for TV's Mad Men, will play Dr. Granier, a NASA official who recruits Helen (Jennifer Connelly) to the scientific team investigating the arrival of the alien Klaatu (Keanu Reeves). Helen then tries to help Klaatu avoid the gun happy human race.

Scott Derickson is directing and the film is expected to be released in late 2008.
