Marking the second of the more recent Doctor Who companions to direct a film (after Karen Gillan), Billie Piper has started the cameras rolling on Rare Beasts. She's also added David Thewlis to the cast.

In addition to directing, Piper wrote and will star in what is described as an "anti rom-com" as a career-driven single mother who falls in love with a charming traditionalist played by Leo Bill. In addition to Thewlis, she has Kerry Fox and Toby Woolf in the cast.

"Rare Beasts is a cautionary tale. Where do we all go after the fallout between men and women? And who do we really need at the end of it all," Piper says in a statement picked up by Deadline. "I’ve been longing to talk 'dramatically' about the world I see around me and ultimately, I’ve always wanted to make my own films. This is a wonderful moment."
