Mirrormask director Dave McKean has signed on to direct another feature for the Jim Henson company, this time based on SF Said’s book Varjak Paw.

The story of the book follows a Mesopotamian Blue Kitten who leaves his sheltered home and ventures out into the big bad world when dangerous black cats threaten his family. Along the way, he learns that he is heir to an ancient feline martial arts master, and must learn the Seven Skills of the Way of Jalal. Only with these new skills can he save his family and survive the mean streets of the city.

McKean illustrated the book, and previously made Mirrormask with the Henson Company, which has also optioned the rights to the second book The Outlaw Varjak Paw. An animated film is planned, although it’s unclear so far whether this, like Mirrormask, will be CGI, or whether it will use traditional techniques. McKean and Said will be writing the script together. We'll keep you up to date as we learn more.
