Here's a surprising - but welcome, for fans of the first film – turn of events. Spartacus TV creator and former Daredevil show-runner Steven S. DeKnight has been handed the reins of the Pacific Rim sequel.

There has been some back-and-forth on the prospects for the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monster mashing action adventure, which at times looked like it might vanish into limbo. But GDT has constantly said that it would eventually get made, and now it seems he's helping to push it forward by stepping back into a producer role and letting DeKnight take the helm.

It'll mark DeKnight's first film directing credit, though he has worked extensively in TV both as writer and director. As it stands now, the Pacific Rim 2 script is by Jon Spaihts, though DeKnight could well take his own pass before he starts production.

Other details remain trapped in the depths of the ocean for now – we don't know exactly what the story will be (though we can be assured of more Jaeger-on-Kaiju battle action) and there's no timetable yet for the film to arrive.
