The last time we saw Metallica on the big screen, it was in the revealing behind-the-tension documentary Some Kind Of Monster. This time, they’re taking the Miley Cyrus route. No, we don’t mean they’re switching from roaring stadium metal to tween pop: they’re planning a concert movie. But this will be no ordinary film in the genre – it stars Chronicle's Dane DeHaan and is written and directed by Predators’ Nimrod Antal.
In an unusual hybrid, **Metallica: Through The Never **focuses on DeHaan as a young member of the group’s crew who is sent on an urgent mission as they play to a sold-out crowd. But what he doesn’t count on is his world getting turned upside down.
The film, which will hit US cinemas on August 9, is the first stage in the relaunch of marketing/distribution company Picturehouse, whose film arm was folded into Warners a while ago. “Nim and the band have made a film that really captures the spirit of Metallica and their millions of loyal fans,” says the company’s boss Bob Berney in a statement. “It’s an entertaining genre film with a concert inside it, a fun ride featuring an exciting young actor, Dane DeHaan. It’s a very cool project to reboot Picturehouse with.” The film was quietly announced last year and is in post-production now.
DeHaan, of course, made a healthy impact with Chronicle and will next crop up in indie drama Kill Your Darlings. He’s also more recently scored the plum role of Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
