After In The Bedroom became 2002's indie darling, Hollywood handed director Todd Field the keys to the door, showed him to the comfy chair and the drinks cabinet and introduced him to their favourite daughter. Instead of taking advantage, however, the sage-like Field took his time to line up several potential projects that he has been developing simultaneously. The latest addition to the list, and one likely to begin production in the autumn, is The Crowded Room. The plot is based on a true story of a man who was arrested for rape and found to have multiple personality disorder, with 24 distinct manifestations. While it may sound like something Donald Kaufman in Adaptation would have come up with, it was perhaps inevitable that Hollywood would jump on one of the vanishingly small number of cases of true multiple personality syndrome and run with it. Field wrote the script for the film, and is polishing it off as we speak. He apparently has a lead actor in mind, but his schedule means that if his actor of choice is not available to begin work in the autumn, Field can go ahead with one of his other films instead. Previously, some heavyweight names have been attached to this project
