And it was all going so well. Just when we thought the new adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel The Crow might actually fly this time, the current iteration of the movie has come crashing back down to the ground with friction between backers and the departure of Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy.
First reported by Deadline and confirmed by a regretful Instagram post by Momoa (find that here), it transpires that creative and financial differences with Davis Films producer (and rights holder) Samuel Hadida have led to Sony backing out of tentative deal to be the film's worldwide distributor and the collapse of a film that was close to kicking off a shoot in Budapest.
Ironically for a story that features a mystical crow bringing a murdered man back to sort-of-life so he can avenge himself and his dead girlfriend, the latest cinematic version keeps getting close to life before being snuffed out itself. So while there was much excitement last year when Hardy and Momoa were properly locked in, now we're all back to square one. It could still all come together, but it's looking increasingly as though The Crow is still suffering from a cursed existence.
Momoa will next be seen in Aquaman, out on 14 December, while Hardy has Conjuring 2 spin-off The Nun set to haunt cinemas on 7 September.
