Lake Placid aside, the humble crocodile (or alligator, or caiman – when they’re chomping on you, can you really tell the difference?) has never had the horror cache afforded to sharks. But Alexandre Aja, the filmmaker behind the stomach-churningly gory Piranha 3D, is here to give the scaly reptilian dinosaurs another bite at the big time in his new croc-horror Crawl.

This one traps Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper in the crawl space of their Florida home as it slowly floods during a hurricane, with a hungry bunch of toothy chompers not exactly helping their chances at escape. It look like an appropriately mean and lean survival horror, with Aja getting plenty of square mileage out of the claustrophobic setting of a water-logged house and nature’s toughest predators. Plus, horror legend Sam Raimi gets a production credit here. And did you see that shot of some poor kill-fodder getting tossed between two crocs?

Crawl will, y’know, crawl – or wait, that should probably be swim – into UK cinemas on 9 August.
