The trailer for Couples Retreat, the latest comedy to unite Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, has just gone online over at Apple.
This is one we’ve been keeping an eye on for a while – partially because of the premise, which sees four couples (only one of which is actually in trouble) travel to an exotic couples counselling resort, only to experience a series of mishaps and setbacks.
But mainly because of the cast – not only do we get that old Swingers duo back together again, but we get Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love, Malin Akerman, Jean Reno and our very own Peter Serafinowicz. That’s a whole lot of comedy bang for your buck.
However, though the trailer looks bright and breezy and there are some nice zingers in there, there seems to be a distinct lack of real belly laughs here, with the trailer struggling to highlight some of the characters (Bateman and Bell barely get a look-in), while some of the gags (oh, look, one of the instructors at the resort is a really muscular guy that the ladies fancy; and his name’s Fabio!) seem a little rote.
But we do like: the easy chemistry between Vaughn and Favreau. The fact that Favreau, for the second film in a row after I Love You, Man, is playing an utter douchebag. Kristin Davis in a bikini. And the idea that a group of actors this talented and funny couldn’t possibly miss. Right?
Much will depend on the certificate and tone – if this turns out to be an R, we’ll be more optimistic than if it were a punch-pulling PG-13. Make no mistake – we’ve still got high hopes for Couples Retreat.
