If you ever wondered what heartbreak smells like, it’s rosemary and peppermint. Historical epic The New World will smell a whole lot sweeter when it’s released in Japan as screenings are going to be accompanied by seven different to play up different moods. Yes, you read that right: Smell-O-Vision is finally a cinematic truth.

A series of machines under back row seats will waft out seven atmospheric smells during the film: a floral smell for love scenes, peppermint and rosemary to tug at the heartstrings.

This frankly bizarre new technology comes from a company who made home versions of it for Japanese homes last year to provide nice mood-setters at work or during horoscope readings.

No word of whether this is going to make an appearance over here, but it sure beats the hell out of scratch ‘n’ sniff. Anyone else going to miss that stale popcorn smell though? We’ve got a bit fond of it ourselves.
