She might be best known on the big screen as Maria Hill from the Avengers films or as a match for Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back last year. Now Cobie Smulders is headed for UK comedy territory with Songbird.

Hailing from Black Mountain Poets director Jamie Adams, Songbird will see Smulders starring with the likes of Jessica Hynes, Noel Clarke (who is also a producer), Ian Smith and Emily Atack in the story of Joanne Sykes, lead singer of once-popular '90s indie rock group The Filthy Dukes. With the band on the verge of splitting up, Joanne discovers that her boyfriend is cheating on her with anyone he can find and that her life will feel awfully empty once the band goes their separate ways.

On a drunken whim, she applies for university, expecting it to match the stereotypical image of wild parties and fun so she can forget her troubles; but the reality is one of yoga, meditation and kale. She even falls for a librarian called Pete. But could this change of gears be what she needs? Songbird has just kicked off shooting in Cornwall.

Smulders has a role in Why We're Killing Gunther and indie comedy drama Literally Right Before Aaron, both of which should be out this year. And there's a chance she'll pop up in at least one of the next two Avengers movies, because what's the MCU without Maria?
