No children’s book is safe from the gaping maw of studio animation departments hunting for the next Shrek.

So it’s no shocker to learn that Sony Pictures Animation has nabbed the rights to the US kiddie classic Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Judi and Ron Barrett’s book is a tale of a world where orange juice rains from the sky and the snow is made up of mashed potatoes.

The Sony ‘toon team are planning a story about a scientist who aims to solve world hunger but ends up with grub falling from the skies.

"This is a project that we put into development right after we formed the company," Sony Pictures Digital president Yair Landau told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's one of my favourite books. It's something we chased right away."

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are writing and directing the movie, which has already been chugging through the development process for six months.
