Christian Bale in Hostiles

Christian Bale doesn't often star in Westerns – his last was 3:10 To Yuma – but he's been tempted back into it by his Out Of The Furnace director Scott Cooper. And now there is a teaser trailer for Hostiles out in the world, so give it a gander.

Bale here plays legendary American Army captain Blocker, battle hardened and bitter in 1892, with a burning hatred for Native Americans. When he's ordered to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to tribal lands in Montana from an isolated outpost in New Mexico, he's initially resistant, but agrees to the task.

Along the way, the pair meets widow Rosalie Quad (Rosamund Pike) whose family was murdered on the plains, and the small unexpected unit must band together to overcome distrust, the landscape's challenges and hostile Comanche tribes intent on making sure they don't reach their destination. From the looks of this, it's a moody, windswept and dramatic tale.

The likes of Ben Foster, Peter Mullan, Rory Cochrane and Jesse Plemons are also in the cast, and the film will screen at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. We'll have to wait to see it, though; no release date has been announced for either Stateside or UK audiences.
