Here’s a story we didn’t expect to write: Charlie Kaufman, the man behind such scripts as Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York, has been brought in to help polish the screenplay for Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom Of Doom.

Now, bear – no pun intended – in mind that this isn’t Kaufman signing up to craft a whole new story for the film. He’s simply finished a couple of weeks’ worth of plot and dialogue tweaks, according to the Heat Vision Blog.

But it’s not unusual for animated movies to bring in outside help – Up benefited from the writing skills of The Visitor’s Tom McCarthy, and Little Miss Sunshine’s Michael Arendt was tasked with penning drafts of the script for Toy Story 3.

Still, Kaufman’s better known for truly unique output like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, so it’s anyone’s guess why he would want to dabble in animation. Could be he’s looking to stretch himself. Or maybe DreamWorks Animation offered him a sweet pay deal that he can use to help fun future projects.

The Kung Fu Panda sequel – which will see Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and the rest back for more martial arts madness – will hit our screens in June 2011.
