Having taken over from the departing Danny Boyle, Cary Fukunaga is in that busy period faced by directors who are going to tackle a Bond movie. And now Fukunaga has been talking up some of his aims for what is currently known simply as Bond 25.

Speaking to Philippine newspaper The Inquirer, he explains that he's mostly just tackling the challenge ahead. "Now that I have the job, I just keep my head down and try to figure out how to make this as good as possible," Fukunaga says, before going on to talk about what is informing his take – mostly, it seems, the recent past of the character.

"In his first Bond movie, Casino Royale, he [Daniel Craig] brought an incredible amount of vulnerability and humanity to the character, which was a big shift from Pierce Brosnan’s run. In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with Casino Royale, and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative."

Which could also go some way to putting to rest rumour chatter of pivoting away from the likes of Christoph Waltz's Blofeld or even Ben Whishaw's Q. "Who is saying those rumors?" he says. "We haven’t finished the screenplay, so there is no way that anyone could know that. Those are two extraordinary actors, so if there is space for them in the story, I would absolutely want them there. But I don’t know yet what it’s going to be."

For more from Fukunaga, including the Bond movie and theme that left the biggest impression on him growing up, head to the Inquirer's site. With regular writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade back on script duty, the cameras should kick off rolling in March, with the film due on 14 February 2020. Here's Everything You Need To Know.
