Some films immediately spark outcry when the seemingly inevitable reboot is announced. We’d guess that fewer people will be so worried about 2004’s** The Butterfly Effect**, the latest movie on the list.
Eric Bress, the co-writer/director responsible for that original effort, has apparently been hired to write the script for a new version.
Ashton Kutcher starred in the first film, playing Evan, a lad trying to overcome painful memories of childhood traumas. As he slowly regains them, he also finds he can travel through time and alter the past, only to discover that whatever he changes makes things worse. His friends – including Amy Smart’s Kayleigh, the girl of his dreams – are affected in various dangerous ways and Evan’s life starts to unravel.
Despite a critical pasting, the film went on to spawn two direct-to-DVD sequels and is apparently considered enough of a concept to warrant re-imagining. Given that Bress co-created the first film with J. Mackeye Gruber, it might actually be interesting to see what he does with a second shot at the idea. Production companies FilmEngine are backing this one, but it’s still only fluttering through development.
