There was no change at the top of the US box office charts this weekend, with the two leading films staying firmly in place. Lee Daniels’ The Butler ruled once again, dropping a mere 30% to score $17 million, while comedy We’re The Millers impressed by slipping just 25% in its third week, adding $13.5 million in second for a current $91.7 million total.
Screen Gems won’t be quite so pleased with The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, because despite opening on Wednesday and having a clear built-in audience from Cassandra Clare’s YA books it could only muster $9.3 million at the weekend, which added to its early launch, makes just over $14 million. It’s hardly the stuff of which franchises are born, though the company and filmmaking team appear to be ploughing on regardless, with the sequel (and a potential prequel) already on the fast track to our screens.
The World’s End, meanwhile, opened in fourth with $8.9 million, more than either Shaun Of The Dead or Hot Fuzz, and in half as many screens as Instruments, which makes Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s latest a winner so far. Rounding out the top five was Planes with $8.5 million.
Elysium fell to sixth place, taking in $7.1 million, ahead of new horror release You’re Next, which earned $7 million. Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters was down in eighth, making $5.2 million, while Woody Allen’s** Blue Jasmine** continued to do well, jumping into the top 10 at ninth with $4.3 million. Finally, Kick-Ass 2 plummeted to 10th place, making $4.2 million.
