On the weekend that those lucky so-and-sos in the States got to see Ant-Man and the Wasp (there’s still a few weeks to wait over here – though you can already read our review here if you're curious) came an update on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next film. Brie Larson is stepping into the red boots of Captain Marvel for the MCU’s 21st instalment — and the actor has confirmed her time shooting the movie is done. Larson shared a photo on Instagram this weekend showing a signed clapperboard and a calendar indicating that she finished work on the film on 6 July.

Captain Marvel will mark Marvel Studios’ first film to be led solely by a woman (Ant-Man and the Wasp is the first to feature a female hero in the title, though Evangeline Lilly co-headlines with Paul Rudd), and also features the franchise’s first female director in Anna Boden, who co-directs with Ryan Fleck. Larson is playing Carol Danvers, one of Marvel's most powerful characters with abilities including flight and super-strength. While Danvers hasn’t been glimpsed in the MCU so far, her arrival was heralded — SPOILER WARNING — in Avengers: Infinity War’s post-credit sequence. The scene saw Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury send an emergency pager message to Danvers just before he turned to dust in Thanos’ finger-snapping attack.

Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, and will explain where the character has been during the rest of the MCU. The likes of Nick Fury and Agent Coulson will be back for the film — and their return means that Jackson and Clark Gregg will be de-aged for all of their scenes in the film. Also starring are Gemma Chan, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn and Annette Bening. The film will launch into UK cinemas on 8 March, teeing up the still-untitled Avengers 4 and establishing Danvers’ presence in the universe ahead of the final fight against Thanos.
